Parish 9/11 Commemorations Include Silent Vigil, Organ Debut

Trinity Church and St. Paul’s Chapel will this year commemorate the 9/11 attacks with events including an overnight vigil, a Taizé service, and a debut concert featuring a new organ replacing the pipe organ damaged by smoke and dust on September 11, 2001.

At St. Paul's Chapel:

Silent Vigil
Begins 8 pm on September 10
Ends 8 am September 11
Events begin with a silent overnight vigil at St. Paul’s Chapel, located across Church Street from the trade-center site. St. Paul’s has become an unofficial memorial to victims of the trade-center attack.

Taizé Service
September 11
8:30 am-10:45 am

Taizé is a style of worship developed by the Taizé monastic community of France. It emphasizes simple songs and chants and readings from Scriptural and secular sources.

Prayer Service

Silent Meditation and Exhibit Tours

St. Paul's will host silent meditation. During this time, visitors can also tour the exhibit, "Out of the Dust," which honors the chapel's ministry to ground-zero rescue workers.

Three services of commemoration and a very special organ recital will take place at Trinity Church.

A free concert inaugurating the Marshal & Ogletree digital organ replacing the organs destroyed on 9/11. The oratorio to be performed is William Albright's Song to David.

Trinity's pipe organ was damaged after dust and smoke from the collapse of the World Trade Center buildings coated it inside and out. Before the collapse, the organ was being used during an impromptu service to soothe frightened people coming off the streets.

The performance is generously underwritten by WQXR.
