Dear Trinity Family,
With stories warning of imminent schism running in major newspapers around the world, the Episcopal Church continues to be in the news. Keeping up with all that is happening is challenging, especially when news articles differ in their interpretations of events.
I hear people asking, "What is really going on? And where does Trinity stand?”
As a parish within the Episcopal Church USA, Trinity is part of the Diocese of New York. We stand firmly behind our leaders, Bishop Mark Sisk, Presiding Bishop Frank Griswold, and Presiding Bishop-elect Katharine Jefferts Schori. As we have been, we continue to be in conversation with others on this and all the vital issues of the Church. We also stand with our partners and the life-changing work of shared mission in all provinces of the Anglican Communion.
The Archbishop of Canterbury recently issued "The Challenge & Hope of Being an Anglican Today," a reflection on the continuing debate over human sexuality and authority in the Church. The Archbishop has set out some points to be addressed at the next Lambeth conference.
Clearly, we have entered a time in which deep reflection, sensitivity, and concern are appropriate and necessary in order to bring about resolution. Time is also key. This process of dialogue will bring us to the 2008 Lambeth Conference, and beyond.
I encourage you to follow these conversations and to make this website a resource when news breaks. Our website will continue to provide links to news and commentary (from all sides of the "fence") so your understanding may be informed beyond the immediate headlines.
For now, let us remember that this debate has been with us for more than a generation, and we have of course maintained and grown our ministries in this period, even while we are engaged in this conversation.
Faithfully,
The Rev. Dr. James Herbert Cooper
