Music That Makes Community

Listen closely: on October 4, 5 and 6, 2007, St. Paul’s Chapel will be filled with wonderful music. The Chapel will partner with All Saints Company to host the Music That Makes Community conference, helping clergy and musicians learn to teach and lead music without relying on hymnals or other printed materials. The conference will explore how to create community through ancient and alternative music practices.

According to Marilyn Haskel, musician at St. Paul’s Chapel and leader of conference, these practices fit in with St. Paul’s mission of hospitality.

“With people coming from all over the world, and from a variety of faith traditions,” she said, “it is imperative that our music be accessible and meaningful. St. Paul’s is dedicated to reconciliation and hospitality. Music helps because we strive to include everyone in worship. Music That Makes Community has the same goal of immediate engagement.”

The conference will be lead by Haskel, composer Ben Allaway, Episcopal priest and composer Eric Law, and Donald Schell, founding rector of St. Gregory of Nyssa Episcopal Church in San Francisco.
