Since last spring, leaders from Trinity Wall Street and the Diocese of New York have met to explore ways that faith communities can strengthen public schools in our area.
The “All Our Children” education initiative is helping Episcopal parishes to inspire and sustain a youth-led movement to give all public school students and families equal access to a true education. Parishioners Beverly Bryant and Susan Mareneck are members of the planning team along with staff members Nathan Brockman, Anita Chan, Beth Fletcher and Rob Ridgell. The education initiative is supported by the Trinity Grants Program.
The Trinity Grants Education Initiative, Trinity Partners and the congregational Witness and Outreach Committee came together to welcome the St. Ann’s Freedom School to Trinity in July for conversation and an impromptu music lesson.
The students, ages seven to 14, and ST. Ann’s staff members met with Trinity volunteers for conversation in the morning. They discussed a range of issues, from school segregation to unhealthy school lunches. Organist Cameron Carpenter then gave the Freedom School students a musical tour of Trinity’s digital pipe organ – and helped them play the instrument, as well.
