A play inspired by a moving September-11 story will have a June 25-29 run at St. Paul’s Chapel.
The play, September Bears, tells how a Manhattan school teacher’s request for teddy bears to give her frightened students turned into a spontaneous national campaign in which some 68,000 such bears were sent to New York.
Some of the play includes reference to the ministry to ground zero workers that was housed at St. Paul’s. Sue Lucarelli, the teacher on whom the play is based, had volunteered at St. Paul’s during that ministry.
Lucarelli says of the play that "It’s a personal story that becomes universal in scope," and that "it presents the Biblical quest -- to overcome evil with good."
Bears was written by Jeff Barker, playwright-in-residence at Northwestern College, Orange City, Iowa. Northwestern College's Drama Ministries Ensemble will perform the play as part of a national summer tour.
Admission is free, but reservations are encouraged. Seats will be available to walk-ins 15 minutes ahead of performances.
