New St. Paul's Banner Depicts Compassion, Spirit of Service

Our new banner across the front of St. Paul's Chapel (right) was designed to be unveiled for the commemoration of the second anniversary of the Sept. 11 attack on New York.

The original banner welcomed visitors to the exhibit "Out of the Dust" for nearly a year. Roughly 30 feet square, it took viewers back to the day of the attack, showing a photograph of the St. Paul's steeple in the dust of a collapsing World Trade Center tower.

Linda Hanick, director of special projects for the Parish, said that the new banner is intended to "emphasize the response to disaster - hope, compassion, and selfless spirit of volunteerism."

For ten months after the 9/11 attacks, the chapel served as a ground-zero relief center, beginning as a spontaneous ministry and winding up a highly coordinated and funded operation. Thousands volunteered their time to help. The exhibition, which more than 700,000 people have visited since it opened on the first anniversary of the attack, pays tribute to that ministry.
